Ocean Jasper Necklace and the 27 amendments

Ocean Jasper Necklace and the 27 amendments

For the past month, I have been working on this ocean Jasper necklace for 2019 The Mix art show. The show is a wonderful collection of Toledo talent. The theme this year is 1919. I created this necklace with the theme in mind. It features blush wire wrapped freshwater pearls and an ocean Jasper set centerpiece. The entire necklace is made of sterling silver with a toggle clasp feature in the front. The necklace has 27 links. Each link representing the 27 amendments of the Constitution. The links with the blush pearl accents are the amendments that spoke to me the most and needed to stand out a little more. Each amendment is special in its own right and serves a purpose however these 7 hold a special place holder in history for me.

The amendments I chose to highlight are as follows:

  • 1st: Freedom of speech, religion, press, and right to assemble & petition.
  • 9th: No one shall be denied their basic constitutional rights.
  • 13th: Slavery abolished.
  • 15th: African America men guaranteed the right to vote.
  • 19th: Right to vote can not be denied based on a person's sex (Yes!).
  • 21st: Prohibition Era ended.
  • 24th: Poll tax is removed (this one is interesting).

If you haven't looked at all the 27 amendments lately I invite you to do a quick Google search. I haven't had a formal history class since high school and it was really enlightening and a good refresher for me to look at what they all are and where they fall in place in history and how far we have come as a nation.

This necklace is available for auction on at The Mix 2019 show. To learn more about the Toledo Arts Commission visit here.
